Center for the Arts
Technique: Watercolor Rendering
Fall 2023
This was my first building project. The program consisted in designing a center for the arts in South Bend, Indiana, and the corresponding garden area.
South Bend, United States

One of my priorities when designing this project was the way the viewer would percieve my building. I used green space to create a central visual axis from the street, that would then open up; leading to the building. After going through it, one would find a gathering place which is followed by a a hedged element, containing three archways. These would then lead to the rest of the garden.
I wanted to integrate the building into the garden, so my main source of inspiration were Victorian green houses. To evoke this, I incorporated a mansard roof, used Corinthian order, and worked with arches and vertical elements to create a sense of lightness and growth.

My main facade features a loggia made of Renaissance arches. This arch motif is carried throughout the building: on the North elevation with recessed arches, and in the West elevation (that leads to the garden) with arched openings.
