A Palazzo Proposal in Via Giulia

Technique: Watercolor Rendering, alcohol markers, and charcoal pencils

Fall 2024

This project is set on Via Giulia in Rome, and is supposed to blend in with the surrounding fabric, while also creating a break from the long Renaissance street. The building is supposed to be mixed use on the ground floor, and apartment buildings of varying prices in the rest of the building.

Rome, Italy

One of my first decisions when designing this project was to create a chamfered corner. This way, the building would create a bit of a setback and thus a break from the long, repetitive street. The primary focus of the facade is therefore in this corner. It features the main entrance to the androne, a broken pediment element from Trajan's Market Hall, and  a balcony for this corresponding apartment in the piano Nobile. The rest of the openings in the Piano Nobile are alternating pediments, following Raphael's motif.

Given that the apartments should be of varying prices, I decided to play with heights and ornamentation. In the section one can see how the Piano Nobile is truly a Piano Nobile, and the apartments become more modest in the upper floors. the Piano Nobile includes three apartments, while the rest includes four.

The ground floor has a main entrance through the androne, and secondary entrances directly to the shops. Through the androne one sees a fountain at the end of the courtyard which acts like a terminus. One then reaches a loggia that leads to the staircase/elevator, the courtyard, or corridors leading to offices and other commercial spaces. When one goes to the second floor, one ends up in a hall that leads to each apartment.
